A couple of weeks ago, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced that it had brought back net neutrality. This was all thanks to a 3-2 vote from the Democratic-led party. With this vote, net neutrality will treat all internet streams the same. It will also stop carriers and ISPs from implementing “faster lanes” by charging content providers more.
But with the release of the first draft of the revised net neutrality rules, a loophole was spotted. Thankfully, the loophole was already taken care of by the time the Final Draft was released yesterday.
According to Ars Technica, the first draft would have allowed providers to implement “fast lanes” on certain apps without charging the provider for special treatment. Instead, it would have placed the charge on consumers to gain access to faster streams. Without spotting this loophole, ISPs could have taken advantage of this and charged its customers more.
By addressing this loophole, the Final Draft of the FCC “clearly prohibits ISPs from limiting fast lanes to apps or categories of apps they select.”
