We haven’t seen a flagship Lumia for what seems like an age, and at MWC this year, I was hoping that might change.
Cam checked out the 640 XL back in March when it was announced at MWC, and now, it's landed in his office, in full retail packaging.
Microsoft has made a habit of releasing affordable smartphones we can’t help but admire.
During the 2015 Mobile World Conference (MWC), Microsoft announced the long awaited arrival of the Microsoft Lumia 640XL. The smartphone will include the pre-installed Windows 8.1 for Phones and the Lumia Denim imaging software.
At first glance, the design of the Lumia 640XL has not changed. The phone case is a polycarbonate exterior that resembles its predecessors. The case contains no metal, thus, minimizing the overall weight of the phone. Even so, the phone does not appear cheaply made. Its rounded corners and thin body provide a simple aesthetic.
The touchscreen is receptive at 1.2 GHz response time and is easy to clean. The Windows 8.1 version works well due to the larger HD screen. In addition, the option to reshape the tiles in the menu screen is helpful.
The 640XL is available with either a single or a dual SIM cardholder. However, the only way to access the microSD slot is to remove the back of the phone and lift out the battery. The procedure is not complicated, but it may become bothersome if you plan on changing out the microSD cards regularly.
The 3000Ah battery claims 39 standby days, a maximum of 23 hours talk time, and 102 hours of browsing time with WiFi. You can charge the battery utilizing the micro USB port located at the bottom of the phone.
For the person on the go, the 640XL includes a GPS and Navigational system. The GPS includes free on and offline maps, in addition to real-time traffic, walking directions, and venue maps (for shopping and transport centers). The navigational system consists of your favorite destinations, speed limit warnings, free, global voice guided navigation, and live traffic data.
The Lumia 640XL boasts of the following features for both personal and business use: Microsoft Office, which includes Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and OneNote. The device also contains OneDrive storage for documents and notes, free downloads for Adobe Reader, Lync and Company Hub. The device also permits multiple email accounts, text-to-speech message reader, and Inbox filtering.
Microsoft also provided a one-year free subscription to Office 365. The Office 365 subscription comprises of 1TB of space on OneDrive storage, (which is great for sharing photos, movies, and documents) and 60 free Skype minutes, per month. Finally, with the Internet 11 Browser you can connect to social media on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Picasa.
The 640XL’s main selling point is the camera. The front facing, full-screen is optimal for selfies or selfies with large groups of your family and friends. The front camera has a focal length of 24 mm and enables video calling. Furthermore, the 4-x zoom enhances video recording and the continuous autofocus.
The back camera lens is from ZEISS optics. Due to its high quality of glass, Zeiss is one of the leading manufacturers of binoculars and sports optics lenses. Therefore, Zeiss optics adds clarity and crispness to the photo in fast auto focus.
In addition, the Lumia Denim software provides the ability to choose whether to use the Rich Capture Mode or switch to manual and remain in control. In the Rich Capture Mode, the phone does all the work. There is no need to worry about the picture’s lighting, image, or framing. However, if you do choose to adjust a photo, then click on the Edit Rich Capture feature. From there you can increase or decrease the exposure of a picture by running your finger up or down the gauge.
In addition, the Moments Capture option allows you to freeze an image in video playback mode, thus, enabling you to obtain the best shot in an otherwise busy scene. Now there’s no need to worry about photobombing.
Moreover, you can embed live action using the Best Frame feature. This option will integrate a moving object into a still shot (imagine a girl sitting on the beach with a bicyclist slowly jumping over her head).
Furthermore, the XL also has a 3.5 stereo headset connector for Audio Streaming. The audio package has off and online Cloud music playback, Graphical Equalizer, and a Media and Music Player. The radio has either FM or Internet options.
You will do well to look into the Lumia 640XL. Its loaded features, excellent camera, upgradable memory, SnapDragon processor, and extended battery life, all add to the phone’s desirability.
